Why websites give you WebP files
WebP is an image format from Google that makes pictures roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG at similar quality. Faster pages rank better, so many websites now serve their images as WebP.
When you save one of those images, you get a .webp file. Some photo viewers, older versions of Office, many upload forms and most print shops still won’t accept it. A JPG copy works everywhere.
Getting the best result
- High quality keeps the JPG visually identical to the WebP.
- Balanced gives a smaller file that still looks good on screen.
- Logos and graphics with sharp edges or transparency look better as PNG.
Questions
What happens to animated WebP files?
Only the first frame is converted, because JPG can’t store animation.
Why is the JPG bigger than the WebP?
WebP compresses better than JPG, so the same picture usually takes more space as a JPG. Choose Balanced quality if you want a file closer to the original size.
What about transparent WebP images?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas become white. Choose PNG to keep them transparent.
Can I convert many images at once?
Yes. Drop as many as you like and download them together as a zip file.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and your files never leave your device.
