Why make a PNG?
- Editing. Saving a JPG again and again slowly degrades it. A PNG doesn’t lose anything when it’s saved.
- Apps and forms that ask for PNG. Some design tools, sticker makers and upload forms only accept PNG.
- Layering in design work. PNG is the usual format for images you place in slides or designs.
What PNG can’t do
PNG can’t restore detail the JPG already lost, and it doesn’t make the background transparent on its own. If the PNG is too large to share, convert it back with PNG to JPG.
Questions
Does converting to PNG improve quality?
No. PNG keeps the pixels exactly as they are now, but it can’t undo compression the JPG already has. It does stop further loss when you edit and save again.
Will the background become transparent?
No. Converting doesn’t remove the background. The PNG shows the same image as the JPG.
Why is the PNG so much bigger?
PNG is lossless, so detailed photos take several times more space than as a JPG.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and your files never leave your device.
