What is an AVIF file?
AVIF is an image format based on the AV1 video codec. It keeps photos sharp at very small file sizes, which is why more websites and phones are starting to use it.
Support outside the browser is still patchy. If an app, a website upload form or a printer rejects your AVIF file, converting it to JPG is the simplest fix.
How it works
Your browser already knows how to read AVIF. This page asks it to decode each image and save the pixels as a JPG, all inside this tab.
Check it yourself. Open your browser’s developer tools, switch to the Network tab and add a photo. You’ll see the tools load once and no uploads. Once the page has loaded, you can turn off Wi‑Fi and keep going.
Questions
Why can’t I open AVIF files?
AVIF is still new. Many photo viewers, editors and upload forms don’t support it yet, even though most modern browsers can display it.
Which browsers can convert AVIF here?
Recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. If your browser can’t read the file, update it and try again.
Will the JPG be larger?
Usually, yes. AVIF is one of the most efficient image formats, so the same picture takes more space as a JPG.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and your files never leave your device.
