When to convert PNG to JPG
- Photos saved as PNG. Photos are full of fine detail, and JPG stores that far more compactly.
- Upload limits. Forms that cap file size or accept only JPG.
- Email. Smaller attachments send faster and fit more easily in inboxes.
When to keep PNG
Logos, icons, diagrams and screenshots that are mostly text look crisper as PNG. If your image needs a transparent background, keep it as PNG too. For more ways to shrink a file, try the image compressor.
Questions
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG doesn’t support transparency, so transparent parts of the image become white.
Will my screenshot look worse?
Text and sharp lines can show faint blur or noise as a JPG. Use the High setting, or keep the PNG for screenshots that are mostly text.
How much smaller will the file be?
For photos saved as PNG, the JPG is often several times smaller. For simple graphics with few colors, the difference is smaller and PNG can even win.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and your files never leave your device.
