How to remove location from photos before selling online

Listing photos are often taken at home. If the location is still stored in the file, it can lead a stranger to your address. Here’s how to check and clean them in about a minute.

Why it matters

Phones save GPS coordinates into every photo by default. A photo of the sofa you’re selling, taken in your living room, can carry coordinates precise enough to find your building.

Many large marketplaces remove this data when they process listing images, but not all do, and the way they handle uploads changes over time. Photos you send to a buyer directly, by email, text message or as a file attachment, usually arrive with everything still inside.

Step by step

  1. Drop your listing photos into the photo location checker. A red Location tag means GPS data is inside.
  2. Download the clean copies the tool makes automatically. They look identical, without location or camera details.
  3. Upload or send the clean copies, not the originals.
  4. So new photos are clean from the start, turn off location for your camera.

Other details that give away where you live

  • House numbers, street signs or the view from a window.
  • Letters, parcels or documents with your address in the background.
  • Car license plates in driveway or garage photos.
  • Reflections in mirrors, TVs and windows.

A plain wall or floor as the background avoids most of these.
